Dragons of the border

Unexpected delivery.
Shay supports Bardas

There is a knock on the door. This knock suddenly turns in to a tune.

Bardas opens the door and looks around.

Eventually he looks down to find a tiny fae dragon stood there. He floats up to eye level “Hiiii Bardas! I heard you had a place here. Finally got the right door!”

Behind where he had been stood is a large box.

“shay… what is that?” he asks

“…they thought I was selling things.” Shay lands on the box. “I Brought lair warming gifts!”
Bardas looks unsure of it all “Um shay.” he begins to protest

“Umm Shay! um um Shay!” Shay taptaps the box and two shadow Tanuki’s suddenly rise out from underneath ti and pick up the box between them. “Lets go in yeah?”

Bardas looks a little more unsure as shadow tanukis start squeezing past in and into his rather spartan home with the chest

“Shay what are you doing?”

“I’m bringing lairwarming gifts!” Shay says as the shadows set down the box in the middle of the room and he floats up as they open it. “Lookit. Got wine, cuz can never have enough feelgood drink There’s oat cookies, cakes and a large ham. A LARGE HAM. Its salted but I know you big dragons’ll eat it. There also a large pillow and a nice blanket cuz SLEEP. Don’t worry its fireproof. My mum also made you a few pots of jam. You’ll need some bread or you can lick it out. Don’t worry its good. Strawberry, GAAAAAAAAAAASP Wheeww! Oh, I also ordered you a bit of furniture and some books. Good books don’t worry. Stooories! they’ll be here later today.”

He lands on the edge of the box and holds aloft a big pot of jam, tail wagging.

Bardas looks at it with a stunned expression on his face “All this?”he asks “I. I cant, this is too much” he pleads “We havent known each other for long and yu are bringing me gifts”

“Pfft, if I don’t, who else is gonna? Face it, you’s friend!” Shay grins and sets the jam jar down. “Got you a book shelf and a chest for stuffs. An candle lamp for night time and some candles. Good for night reading.” he grins and looks around “So roomy! Hrm.” he puts his hands on his hips and looks around. “Needs flowers I think.” he taps his chin “Ooh, you guys don’t do flowers. nevermind..!”

“shay” he protests even as the shadows set about setting the new gifts into places about his home. he had spend his nights along and in the dark, never caring to spend the nights reading or such "I must.. " he sighs and slumps forwaard. a shadow tanuki slipping the dragoncushion under him just in time

Shay smiles and waves a hand, lights flaring up around the room. “Fun times! Well. You need a hobby and reading is good for you.” he smiles “ooh, do you want a lair warming party? I bet it would be fun!”

“I know just the fae!”

“And we can fit Saber in here.. and probably Rith too.. hrm.. though he’s been spending time with Ator, bet they might be a bit big..”

“Kaye could fit too, hrm.. she might wanna bring Ator and Baroth though.. have you ever met Baroth? He’s all knightly.” shay drones on

Bardas shakes his head as the little faerie lists off names. he still had mixed feelings on dragons in general, especially stranger dragons

“ooh ok. Well.. Saber and maybe that Rowan fellow at least. Quiet drink and smils, mm? I could learn an instrument maybe.” Shay tangents

“Shay” he pleads “This is too much. I have only accepted being as I am now for a few days now and you are throwing too much at me. a party? with a dozen dragons I dont know”

Shay angles his head “Oh.. i’m sorry. Ok, no party. I just uh.. I get carried away with ideas. But the books will be good for you. Don’t worry, half of the are human stories. I like human fairy tales” he says, then giggles at the term. “fairy.. tales..”

There is a knock at the door.

“Stories of dragon slaying?” he asks with a hint of suspicion in his voice “Shay.. Tell me.why do you do this? I was your enemy only a few short weeks ag.. Who is that”

Bardas opens the door

“Nono, most are fantastical stories, most are dragon friends…” the door knock distracts him. bardas opens it to find a huge sized dragon peering down at him who has set down a few large boxes. “Delivery from one ‘Shay, The Colourshaper and champion of the clutch.’ You are Bardas, yes?”

Bardas swallows and nods his had “Y..yes. ah, dont let the human name fool you. I am a real dragon”

The large bronze dragon angles his head. “Riiight you are. Well, can I have your claw imprint?” he holds down a large piece of soft wood that looks cut straight from a tree trunk, it even has a ring of bark around it.

Bardas ok at it before lifing a claw, unsure as he never did this before. leaving a mark on the soft wood that he hoped was unique to him as his signiture was as a human
the dragon nods his head, satisfied as he tucks it in a bag around his neck. “Thank you. Good day.” he turns about, grabs another large box from behins him and flies away to make another delivery.

Shay is suddenly on Bardas’s shoulder, peering over “Ooh. There’s the stuff.” The shadow tanuki’s move past and begin bringing the boxes within.

“You are responsable for this arnt you?” he closes the door behind the shadows

Shay nods “That’ll be the books.. that’ll be the bookcase and that’ll be the chest.” he smiles
Shay leans in and conspiratorially whispers in Bardas’s ear “I filled the chest with a real hoard.”

Bardas binks and shivers as some alien emotion takes hold of him “A Hoard?” he shakes himself to expel such feelings “I don’t need a hoard”

Shay grins “Open iiit.”

With great reluctance he does so

Shay’s shadows begin to tear off the wrapping from the bookcase and then set it in a place just outside the sleeping chambers. Then they open the box.. its filled with books. They do look a little beat up.. Shay evidently bought them from a second hand book store.

Bardas opens the chest to find it filled with candy of lots of colours. There are also candies and chocolate bars evidently traded from human lands.

Shay gives Bardas a wink as he looks up in disbelief.

“I miss home” Bardas says eventually. looking down at the human things

Shay pats Bardas’s neck from his shoulder “It took me a while to seek out these things for you.. but there is a human store in the humanoid trade district that stocks them on Old Mare road.”

“I dont want to think about it any more” he says turning away from it all and pressing his head against the cold stone wall

Shay looks sad “I.. i’m sorry..” he says as he lands on the chest “I.. just wanted to help you feel better.”

he takes a shuddering breath “I know you do” he closes his eyes “But I used to be human. a life I cant go back to. being reminded of it hurts”

“I.. i’ll take that candy away if you like..”

“I need to move on. like Cimmerian says. Embrace what I am” he slumps a little

Shay nods “And i’ll do that I can to help You. I.. I know i’m not a big and strong dragon like you are.. I can only relate so much.. but i’ll try.”

“Maybe..” he begins “maybe I should have a new name”

Shay angles his head “That.. is actually quite smart.”

“It would be like letting go of my old self. my old name” he turns to you with wet eyes

Shay hops down off the chest which closes with a ‘thunk’, he turns Tanuki as he walks over, then stands beside Bardas, one hand over his shoulder. “Hey hey.. come on. It’ll be all right..” he pats him awkwardly "You should keep part of it.. the first Syllable. “Bar… its part dragon you know? As in Baroth or Baridon.”

“I am not sure.. " he thinks for a moment “Cimmerian called me kavari Wiot the other day. Fiend Foe”

Shay nods and hrms “Better friend. Barthuri. Goodwing.”

“perhaps.. I should take that for my name? Kavari Wiot” he sits down and tries the name “I am kavariWiot” feeling the word on the tongue

Shay angles his head “Hrm.. it is possible to change your name, I doubt you will be challenged on it.. though keep in mind some might find it a little presumptuous. But given time you will gain acceptance. Such a name is usually a title.” He smiles “Kavariot. The words can blend in to one another and keep the same meaning.”

“You think? it was given by the prince” he looks down at shay

“You can keep Kavari Wiot if you prefer.. it is just an alternative. You can ask him if you wish his approval.”

“I.. I will do that” he says and before rising to his feet again “Any more surprises?”
Shay steps back “Oh, none. I figure the books would keep you busy.” he gestures over to the book case, now filled with books, half of them human sized and half intended for dragons.. quite large volumes. “And I figure the candy, cake, cookies and jam would be good snacks and dessert for your ham meal.. ooh yes I forgot. my mother insisted I bring this to you.” he rummages in his bag and pulls out a large tooth brush and a pot of paste. “Honestly I think its silly, our teeth grow back if we lose them an unlimited number of times.”
“Maybe I will have that party.” he says “Once we deal with the next imposter agent”
Shay smiles “That would be great!” he sets the tub of paste and toothbrush down on the top of the chest, then sits beside it. “It’ll give us something to look forward to.”
Bardas smiles more “Something to look forward to” he acknowledges “new memories to make”

Shay grins and stands “All right..!” he claps “that’s the spirit. Well.. would you like to come with me for a drink.. Kav..?” he winks.

He nods “Sure. lets drink”
The Joker and the Sneak
Saber meets with his doppleganger

Saber looks around the empty room, there’s really nothing in the way of furniture or lighting, but in the center is a medium sized dragon with dark scales, curled up in a ball. Saber silently approaches it and sits down, “Rowan.” He says simply.

The ball of scales slowly uncurls and Saber finds himself looking at his own face “I knew you would come Saber, though much earlier than I would have”

“Then you know what I have to say already.” Saber says, his eyes focused and a slight growl to his tone “You know what you’ve done to me, and how I feel about it. I don’t know what’s going through your head though. What did you think you’d accomplish?”

“You know as much as I do, Saberous” you see your face turn to look at the window then back to you “I wanted my home back after i took it.” he looks confused “you took it”

“I took nothing. I won it.” Saber growls, pacing in a circle around his double, “You played the game with me and lost.”

“I did not lose” he growls back “You got caught in the end and I won it back” Rowan turns to keep facing Saber.

“And yet here we are.” Saber says, “Did you really win anything? …Do you even know who you are right now?” Saber asks, his tone softens but it’s almost imperceptible.

The words seem to strike a blow on the double, who turns his gaze away “I took the chance” he says quietly

“You did. And you know, I detest those that rely on magical assistance rather than their own skill.” Saber says, “Because of that, I don’t properly know how to counter it.” He removes his ring, and holds it up in the light, “But you’ve always found these silly trinkets to be valuable tools. You’re still the same Rowan… At the same time” Saber continues, slipping Rowan’s old ring back on, “You had everything you needed. I was out of the picture, no one could have possibly noticed that you weren’t me. You could have had Noire all to yourself. But you couldn’t keep it up. Why is that?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” he looks at the ring with some recognition “I had Noire but it came with a cost… and your friends were single minded”

“They can be a bit stubborn. But that’s nothing new to us. Certainly not you. You’re resourceful. You could have done a lot more than you did to stop them.” Saber says, “You want something else that I have, don’t you? That’s why you’re still wearing my skin. If the cost was so great, you could have gotten rid of it easily if you let Shay free you, first.”

“But, I didn’t…” he frowns “I couldn’t….” then in a whisper “I don’t know how much of what i think is me”

“You want an identity.” Saber says, “That was your cost. You no longer have one.” He says coldly, “Do you want me to give you one?”

“Of course I have one” he stammers “I am Rowan. master thief. champion of the clutch” Rowan steps towards saber with teeth bared.

“I AM THE CHAMPION OF THE CLUTCH!” Saber growls, slashing his double across the right eye with his claws. His double balks, as searing pain fills his face. Blood starting to cloud vision in his eye “You’ve trespassed on my accomplishments enough, whelp!”

Rowan lets out a pained cry before covering his face with a paw “Your accomplishments?” he says with a pained an shocked voice “I was there. when we killed Paige!”

“You were not, Rowan. You were here in Noire.” Saber says, softly, his previous anger somehow gone entirely, “You were building an empire, one that you should be proud of.”

“I..” he breaths while his eyes squeeze shut “I was?”

“You lost a game that you didn’t agree to play. As did I. Which is why we’re here right now.” Saber says, opening his bag pulling out a red colored potion, he lifts Rowan’s paw off of his eye and pours it on the wound, causing a sting, “You were. Commit the memory of Noire to your mind because it is your legacy. Use this pain to do that.” The potion drips away, leaving a noticeable scar over his eye. “You are not me, Rowan. You are your own dragon.” Saber says, “It’s about time you acted like it.”

“Is that why you came?” he sneers “To scare my face and protect your identity? I knew you would come to punish me” he rubs at his wound “And you give Noire to me, when? Call it my legacy? what a joke. You give it to yourself.”

Saber laughs, “Noire is not mine to give. You said it yourself. In the end you didn’t lose. I got caught. You won it back. I didn’t come to punish you, Rowan. You know me better than that. I came to make you understand something that your friend Bardas knows.” Saber says, “Who you are is what you do from now on.”

“You tell me this but you don’t even know who you are” Rowan smiles “I know as you do. we are runts. stunted things”

“…What are you talking about” Saber asks, suspiciously, “Are you still searching for the upper hand?”

“We have no parents.” he gingerly takes his paw from his face “none that we know of”

“No. We were both left to fend for ourselves.” Saber says, cautiously.

“You cant lie to me” Rowan says with confidence "you never knew your parents. who they were, where you came from. " Rowan circles Saber now “You always felt different from the others. and you knew something was wrong when Rith kept growing and you stopped as you are now”

Saber is silent a moment, looking forward, rather than watching his opponent, “What of it?” he growls, a little more genuinely than before.

The pacing stops "I don’t need to tell you what you fear. " his voice comes close to your ear “You don’t even know what you are and you come to tell me what I am”

“Why, Maybe I am the real saber and you are my fake”

Saber stands up and turns looking Rowan directly in the eyes, his face unreadable, “Do you want to be, Rowan? Is that what you really want? We’re not that different. Few people could tell the difference. You could even claim the scar was left by your fake before he escaped from you.”

Rowan gives an equally unreadable expression “I want the same thing you do. We both know that”

“I want you to forgive me, Rowan” Saber says.

“I want you to forgive me, Saber” Rowan echos

“I already have” They say together

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.
